While the management of the Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board, (RMB) in Rwanda continues to encourage mining professionals to be environmentally friendly, Big Mining Company Ltd operating in the Ruhango region has put its efforts into mining where they speak that environmental conservation is their goal.


The management of Big Mining Company Ltd, says that they have time to discuss with the workers on how to continue to develop the mining sector so that it continues to produce the right production while preserving the health and safety of those who work in this sector and the preservation of the environment.
On the role of the workers, they say that they cooperate with the management in preserving the environment, including clearing and planting trees without extracting precious stones and cutting down erosion.

UWIMBABAZI Grace, a mining company in this company, says that they cooperate with the management to preserve the environment. we all work together both in planting the trees and in leaving them to die when they are young. As for Dusabimana Agnes, she says that since she arrived at the Big Mining Company, they have planted many trees and that some of them have already grown.

MUCYO MUHIRE Ange Serge, who is in charge of mining at Big Mining Company, says that a lot of effort has been put into environmental conservation, as they have 14 special workers in charge of all the work related to environmental conservation. in Kampani that do mining in Rwanda, because now we have 14 employees who take care of all the work related to the maintenance that saves us in company.

HUBAKIMANA Thomas, the CEO of BIG MAINING CAMPANY LTD, says that they are well positioned to protect the environment in order to promote the mining of precious stones.

HUBAKIMANA continues to say, “We have put effort into maintaining the environment because now we have an environmental protection officer who must monitor the excavated areas so that the areas that need to be restored and the areas that need to be cut are destroyed. We are doing this in order to continue mining, but it is environmentally friendly.” Big Mining Company Ltd, which started research in 2014, currently has 300 employees and operates in Ruhango District.


In February 2024, the Government of Rwanda and the European Union (EU) signed a cooperation agreement aimed at promoting environmentally friendly mining. This agreement was signed on the Rwandan side by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Dr Vincent Biruta, while on the EU side there was the Commissioner for International Cooperation, Jutta Urpilainen.

In this agreement, both parties are committed to ensure that the minerals are mined in an environmentally friendly way and to find the capacity to build the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the mining of minerals.
